When asked about some of the highlights of playing at South by Southwest this past spring, Isaac Flynn, guitarist for Lawrence, Kan.-based Quiet Corral - headlining at Radio Radio on Friday night — said one of his favorite moments was seeing Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips on the stage nearby, paying close attention to their set. "I didn't know exactly how to react," he said. "I know he's a pretty eccentric guy, so I was a little nervous but at the same time it was pretty cool that he had taken the initiative to check out our songs."
"I feel like we're really coming into our own as a band obviously we've musically," said lead singer Jesse Roberts "The EP was kind of thrown together, it has the feeling of a collection of songs, but the album is going to be a lot more cohesive."
Quiet Corral's rich lyrics and smooth, well-instrumented Americana sound has been most often compared to Mumford & Son but, as it is with a lot of musicians, such comparisons make them a little bit uneasy.
"I definitely think that Kansas comes out in our music," Roberts said. "Just the speed of life and the way this state is has influenced our music. It's very easy-going."
Quiet Corral will stop by Radio Radio on a sort of Midwest mini-tour that will take them to Louisville and Nashville as well, before heading back to Kansas for a few weeks to finish the album. Then, later in the summer, they will embark on a series of tour dates that will ultimately culminate in October at Austin City Limits.
Supporting Quiet Corral will be two local Fountain Square based acts, Bait and Tackle Tabernacle and Christian Taylor and Homeschool.
