Three and a half stars
Harrison Art Center.
A vivacious and interesting exhibit, Versions features mixed media works on wood, canvas, and paper. Iconic images make cameos in the art and draw upon the light-hearted, pop nature of the works. Chinese newspapers adorn the backdrop in “Godzilla’s Checklist.” Thick brush strokes in black paint loosely combine to create the figure of Godzilla against a busy city backdrop. Chaos ensues and the work comes to life as the black paint explodes, as if to foreshadow the destruction that is to come to the city. “Big Fight” features an unlikely cast of characters – Sherlock Holmes and the Joker go head to head in unlocking a mystery, while a warrior and women wait in the background. Perhaps most interesting is the “Big Fight Sketch” – a larger than life version of the work, presumably a sketch in preparation for the final product. Loose watercolors drip down and run the length of the sketch, illustrating that the artist worked quickly while the painting hung across the entire wall. These works and more are available through Oct. 27, 396-3886.
