John Henton

Three stars
Crackers Broad Ripple; Oct. 17

John Henton’s style is not bold in material, delivery or language, but in its modest charm — his confidence in his material over himself. He successfully avoids being pegged into a sub-genre of stand-up comedy by being relaxed and personable — informal but professional. The show was, however, lacking in any moments of uproarious laughter or unforgettable impromptu interaction. There was a fair amount of tired boner jokes. But generating laughter from a modest crowd last Friday was a colossal task in itself, following a pair of droll opening acts. Both opening comedians blamed audience ineptitude for their failures. I blame their terrible jokes and irritable delivery. Henton’s everyday humor brought us back into his living room, like drinking beers with your funniest buddy.
