Jazz Notes 8/29/07

• Labor Day weekend offers a pair of free outdoor events for jazz lovers and their families. Sunday, Sept. 2, the first “Lotzajazz” will be held at Washington Park North Cemetery and Family Center at Kessler Boulevard West Drive and Michigan Road, 5-8 p.m. Featured jazz artists are Cathy Morris and Friends, the Clifford Ratliff Group and vocalist Kelleen with the Sean Baker Trio and guests Bill Lancton and Al Shikaly. The free event is a fund-raiser for the Pike High School “Realizing Your Dream Scholarship Fund” for graduating seniors.

• Monday, Sept. 3, the 10th Annual Labor Day Street Fair will take place at 54th Street and College Avenue. The free event is in memory of Pete Pipkin and Patricia Holland, former owners of the buildings in which the Jazz Kitchen, The Piano Merchant and Yats are currently housed. Their passion for jazz created The Place to Start, a successful jazz club in the ’80s, now known as the Jazz Kitchen. Music starts at noon with The Frank Glover Quartet with Hall of Fame pianist Claude Sifferlen; The Midcoast Swing Orchestra performs from 2:30-4 p.m. and Rob Dixon & Triology play jazz and funk grooves from 4:30-6 p.m.
