Jazz Notes 8/15/07 

• Animals & All that Jazz at the Indianapolis Zoo really “Does It Big” Thursday, Aug. 16 for their 2007 series finale. The Buselli-Wallarab Jazz Orchestra with Emmy Award-winning male vocalist Everett Greene and the popular fiery vocalist Cynthia Layne team up for solo and duet performances at 5:30 p.m. in the zoo’s Café on the Commons. Admission is free for zoo members; adults cost $13.50, $8.50 per senior and child age 2 to 12.

• A new jazz outlet, the Center Stage Café at 970 Ft. Wayne Ave., will feature jazz vocalist D.A. Young Friday, Aug. 17 from 8-10 p.m. The coffeehouse offers a sandwich deli and non-alcoholic beverages. No cover charge.

• The Chatterbox has KWYJIBO, Peter Kienle’s jazz and rock fusion band, performing Friday, Aug. 17. Oliver Nelson Jr. leads his ensemble through jazz standards on his flute Saturday, Aug. 18. Music runs from 10:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. Admission costs $5. Cathy Morris & Friends play Sunday, Aug. 19 at 8 p.m. No cover charge.

• The Jazz Kitchen will feature the dynamic Derrick Gardner & the Jazz Prophets Friday, Aug. 17 and Saturday, Aug. 18. Gardener was a mainstay of the Harry Connick Jr. Orchestra and the Count Basie Orchestra. The six-member Jazz Prophets include trombonist brother Vincent Gardner of the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra and Rob Dixon on tenor sax. Shows both nights are at 8:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. Admission  costs $15.

• Saxophonist Keni Washington plays Easley Winery’s Groovin’ in the Garden series Saturday, Aug. 18 from 2-5 p.m. No cover charge.

• The J.P. Harden Project plays Deano’s Vino Saturday, Aug. 18 at 8 p.m. No cover charge.

• Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse downtown will feature Rob Dixon’s tenor sax with the Ken Fary Duo Sunday, Aug. 19 from 7:30-11:30 p.m. No cover charge.

• The Finnell Factor Band plays Indy Park’s “Jazz in the Park” at Washington Park Sunday, Aug. 19 from 6-8 p.m. No cover charge.

• The Twin Cats will play the Broad Ripple Park Jazz Series Tuesday, Aug. 21 at 7 p.m. The free concert is presented by Indy Parks.
