Jazz Notes 12/5/07

• A concert to celebrate the life of Aletra Hampton will be held Monday, Dec. 17 from 7 to 10 p.m. in the Indiana History Center’s Basile Theater. The show will feature performances by Aletra’s youngest brother, trombonist Slide Hampton, and Aletra’s nephew, trumpeter Pharez Whitted, as well as a couple unrelated local legends, pianist Melvin Rhyne and saxophonist David Young. In all, 36 local jazz performers will contribute their talents to the memorial concert. There is a suggested donation of $10 for the show and free parking is available on the north side of the IHC.

• The Jazz Kitchen will offer some hard-hitting jazz sounds this weekend. A quintet fronted by trumpeter Pharez Whitted and featuring Eddie Bayard on tenor sax will play on Friday, Dec. 7. Shows are at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. and admission is $15. Saturday, Dec. 8 marks the return of celebrated saxophonist David “Fathead” Newman, known for his leading role in the Ray Charles band. Steve Allee will join Newman on piano. Shows are at 8:30 and 10:30 p.m. and admission is $20.

• Sunday, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m., the Indianapolis Jazz Orchestra will play its “Big Band Christmas” program at the Indiana State Museum’s Dean & Barbara White Auditorium. The 17-member IJO will accompany singers Rick Vale and Lydia McAdams in traditional and popular holiday hits, including several new arrangements of old chestnuts. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students in advance. Call 317-232-1637.

• Thursday, Nov. 28, the standing-room-only crowd at the Holiday Showcase, presented by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation at the Madame Walker Theatre, was treated to a snappily-paced and diverse program. Singer Mary Moss got everyone in a feel-good holiday mood, while Hall of Fame inductee Hazel Johnson Strong wowed all-comers with her powerful voice on an impromptu version of “Teach Me Tonight.” But it was 10-year-old saxophonist Bryan Thompson who stole the evening with a daring solo complete with circular breathing, earning a standing ovation for his efforts.
