JAM Hits Stride
Like spring flowers, Jazz Appreciation Month is blooming all over town.
Wednesday, April 9, The Jazz Kitchen (5377 N. College Ave.) will bring in the world jazz sound of Fareed Haque’s Flat Earth Ensemble. The musical mission of the Flat Earth Ensemble is to incorporate the charismatic dance and folk music of Haque’s Punjabi roots in India and Pakistan with the traditions of American jazz and funk. Joining Haque on guitar are Ganesh Kumar, kansira; Jim Feist, tabla; Willerm Delisfort, keyboard; Alex Austin, bass; Jason Smart, drums. Shows are at 8 and 10 p.m.
Also Wednesday at Ben Davis High School (1200 N. Girls School Road), American steel pan jazz master Andy Narrell and Miami University’s 25-member steel pan band will offer jazz with a Caribbean flavor. Admission to the 7 p.m. concert is $5.
Thursday, April 10, Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Karrin Allyson and her trio will join the Ball State University Jazz Lab Ensemble (led by director of jazz studies Mark Buselli) for a 7 p.m. concert at the Indiana History Center (450 W. Ohio St.). Tickets can be purchased for $25 by calling 317-803-2427, or at the door for $30.
Also Thursday at the Artsgarden (100 W. Washington St.), The Maple Trio will lay down jazz, soul and country music in a free concert beginning at 12:15 p.m.
Friday, April 11, veteran tenor saxophonist Tommy Wills/Twosome will play jazz and blues at the International Tea and Coffee Café (630 Virginia Ave.) from 7-10 p.m. Cover is $5.
At Clowes Hall (4602 Sunset Ave.) on Friday, jazz saxophonist/educator Jamey Abersold will perform with the Butler University Jazz Ensemble in a free concert open to the public at 8 p.m. Earlier in the day, Abersold will give a clinic/master class from 1-3 p.m. in the Krannert Room at Clowes.
Finally, on Tuesday, April 15 at the Artsgarden, Tish Lyndsey will perform jazz, pop and soul in a free concert at 12:15 p.m.

Mark your calendar! The Second Annual WICR Jazz Festival is Saturday, April 19.
The free outdoor event will run from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the University of Indianapolis on Smith Mall (1400 E. Hanna Ave.). Here’s this year’s lineup:

The first jazz festival of the season offers a chance to bring your lawn chairs and blankets. UIndy Food Services will have a picnic lunch available for purchase. It’s a family-friendly, alcohol-free event with free jazz and parking. Presented by WICR.88.7 “The Diamond,” the festival is a way for the station to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month and say thanks to its listeners.
