The Arbor Day Foundation has named IUPUI a Tree Campus USA for the first time.

The Tree Campus USA program, which began in 2008, requires that five standards be met in order to gain the designation: maintain a tree advisory committee, have a campus tree care plan, dedicate annual funds toward trees, hold an Arbor Day observance event and have student service-learning projects.

The program, co-sponsored by Toyota, honors colleges and universities that not only practice effective forest management, but also promote conservation efforts within their school communities.

"Seeing so many campus groups come together, working toward a common goal, has been a tremendous benefit of this effort," said Campus Facility Services' manager for Ground Services Steve Stringer, who set the goal of gaining this designation a few years ago.

Colleen McCormick, director of the IUPUI Office of Sustainability, said that the move toward a greener campus would not stop with this achievement.

"This designation demonstrates the commitment that IUPUI has and will continue to have for supporting and expanding the amount of trees on campus," she said.
