Indy Film Talk: A busy week at IU Cinema

Few seals of approval in the film world are more impressive than Martin Scorsese's.

This weekend, IU Cinema will host a series of events related to Martin Scorsese Presents Masterpieces of Polish Cinema — the filmmaker's North American tour of 21 restored Polish cinema classics he chose personally for Milestone Films to distribute across the country.

Polish filmmaker Krzysztof Zanussi will be at IU Cinema Friday and Saturday to present two of those films — Camouflage on Friday night at 6:30 and The Constant Factor on Saturday at 6:30. Camouflage takes an absurdist look at academia, exploring the relationship between a young linguistics professor and his diabolical senior colleague. The Constant Factor follows a young dreamer confronting the death of his mother and his professional fate.

IU Cinema will return to the States on Sunday, focusing on the work of actor Kevin Kline, an IU alumnus. You can see his Western Silverado Sunday at 3 p.m. (Tickets are $3.) His latest film, My Old Lady is screening that night at 6:30. The comedy, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, stars Kline as a down-on-his-luck New Yorker who inherits a Parisian apartment — and two feisty tenants (Maggie Smith and Kristin Scott Thomas).

Monday afternoon, at 2 p.m. in the IU Auditorium, Kline will speak about his illustrious career, including his Oscar-winning role in the classic caper comedy A Fish Called Wanda, which he will present at 7 p.m.

It's a big week for movies in Bloomington. Amid IU Cinema events, the Diabolique International Film Festival is gracing the town next weekend (Sept. 18-20). Stay tuned for more about that in the days to come.
