Indy-born book hones bass guitar skills

Teach Yourself Visually Bass Guitar
By Ryan Williams and Richard Hammond
Wiley Publishing; $24.99

Authors Richard Hammond and Ryan Williams, both bass players who have recorded and performed with numerous groups, including Erasure, present a well-polished manual that is both an introductory tutorial for the new musician and a handy reference for the more experienced player.

They cover most of the basics early on, including properly holding the bass, tuning and fretboard fingering. Scales, chord progressions and simple rhythms follow. The lessons themselves are kept simple, and the photographs, featuring model and bassist Sharon Koltick, effectively demonstrate both proper and improper techniques — something that can be difficult to teach using only a book, rather than an actual instructor.

See this week’s Music Section for a preview of a concert featuring Ryan Williams and WarnerGear.
