With a beer festival in just about every community across Indiana and sometimes more than one within an easy drive, the founders of Valpo Beer Fest issued this plea for responsible enjoyment: “We ask that you please refrain from driving impaired.  Please arrange to have a designated driver take you home following the fest.  We want to ensure that all attendees get home safely.  The future of the festival depends on your safety and compliance.  Thank you.”
That said, start your calendar!

April 1: Bier Taproom, annual Barrel-Aged Sanitarium release. “Barrel-aged  anitarium is our Belgian Quadrupel aged in a bourbon barrel for 12 months to create a strong balance between bourbon and Belgian flavors.  Dark cherry, raisin and plum notes mingle together with the malt richness that one expects   rom a dark abbey ale.  As this Belgian warms up, the layer upon layers of flavors are exposed,” said Brewer Darryl Connor. It’s a sipping brew at 12.5% ABV.

April 9: Learn to Homebrew event at The Farm at Prophetstown, 3534 Prophetstown Road, Battle Ground, IN 47920. “Beer is part of our history and has been around for centuries,” said Executive Director Leslie Martin Conwell, in the announcement of the inaugural event.

Gary Burniske is the instructor of the event. Spokesperson Lauren Reed provides his bio: “Burnski has a career in international development with a focus on food security with rural communities.  Fluent in 5 languages, he’s lived long term in over a dozen countries and worked in over 50 countries.  Against this backdrop, he has been able to sample the beers of the world – both the good and bad as well as the exquisite and the undrinkable.  He began brewing in the deserts of Sudan where beer was not available.  He used soft drink bottles for his brew and thus coined the terms “Coke light” and “Pepsi light” in a meaningful brewers sense.  Gary’s former permanent residence was in the Pacific Northwest, where he got to know world class artisan brewers such as the Walking Man in Stevenson, WA.  He moved to West Lafayette to join Purdue University four years ago and became involved with the home-brewers circles operating in the area.  Since his arrival he has been brewing various types of home brews including a wide range of ales, IPAs, Double IPAs, Belgiums’ and Stouts.  His beers are truly the best you’ll ever taste.”

Learn to Homebrew: $20 per person, noon-3 p.m. Registration is required.  Must be 21+ with a valid ID. Call to register 765-567-4700;  more at prophetstown.org.
