Indy 500 practice starts 

The runup to the 100th running begins

Its opening day 2.0 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway: Cars will to the oval for the first official practices for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 presented by PennGrade Motor Oil today. Activity at the track begins today at noon as the rookies will take place in the rookie orientation program.

Rookies taking place in this year’s rookie orientation are: Max Chilton, Spencer Pigot, Stefan Wilson (brother of the late Justin Wilson), Matt Brabham and Alexander Rossi. 

The rookie orientation takes place in three phases. Phase one consists of 10 laps ranging between 210-215 mph. Phase two is 15 laps between 215-220 mph. The final phase of the rookie orientation program is 15 laps over 220 mph. Each of these three phases show an increase of 5 mph over last year’s program.

Once the orientation is complete, the track will be open to all drivers starting at 2 p.m. today.

This is today’s official track schedule for opening day for the Indianapolis 500:

 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. - Ticket Office Opens

 10:00 a.m. - Gates Open

 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. - Rookie Orientation Program

 2:00 p.m. - 06:00 p.m. - Indy 500 Practice

 6:00 p.m. - Gates Close
