Andretti Autosport ruled the day in the first day of practice for the Indy 500. Marco Andretti (228.978) took the top of the speed chart, followed by Carlos Munoz (228.945), Ryan Hunter-Reay (228.003), and Alexander Rossi (226.865) for a 1-4 sweep by Andretti.
All 33 entrants took time on the track today. Conor Daly saw limited laps today due to gear box (transmission) issues. There were no accidents on the track today, with yellow flags only for debris on track and track inspection.
Spencer Pigot spent the most time on the track today turning a total of 81 laps in the first official practice session. He also ran 76 laps during the Rookie Orientation Program. Josef Newgarden was second in laps ran today with 67 laps followed by Helio Castroneves (62), Juan Pablo Montoya (54), and Ed Carpenter (53) round out the top five.
Rossi led all rookies with a speed of 226.685 followed by Max Chilton (224.639), Spencer Pigot (222.816), Matt Brabham (222.578), and Stefan Wilson (222.007). All five rookies were able to successfully complete the Rookie Orientation Program today.
Townsend Bell, Bryan Clausen, Sage Karem, JR Hildebrand, and Oriol Servia all completed the veteran refresher today. In other to pass the veteran refresher, the drivers must satisfy phases 2 (phase two is 15 laps between 215-220 mph) and 3 (15 laps over 220 mph) of the Rookie Orientation Program.
Angie’s List Grand Prix of Indianapolis winner and INDYCAR points leader Simon Pagenaud finished 16th on the speed chart with a top speed of 224.322. Defending Indianapolis 500 champion Juan Pablo Montoya was 13th fastest at 224.613 mph
Practice for the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 resumes tomorrow afternoon at noon. Qualifying will take place on Friday and Saturday, with the race taking place on May 29.
