Indianapolis Poetry Slam at the Elbow Room

Elbow Room

It's true: you don't need an MFA to write or appreciate poetry; however, to judge poetry, you need a dry erase board and marker. For those who braved the cold, the evening proved quite enjoyable. Five poets gave it their all for the roughly 40 guests in attendance; three were first timers! This low turnout of contestants meant that all poets read in each round and cumulative points determined the winners. The poets brought their own unique strengths and personalities to their performances, and each proved that it's never as easy as it looks, regardless of subject matter. First, second and third place winners received prizes and audience members received tickets for a raffle as well. Rob Sturma shared a few poems, including his musings regarding loving and hating love, as well as the amusingly nostalgic retelling of his 14th birthday, complete with two cans of PBR and a Van Halen cassette. Check out the Indianapolis Poetry Slam every second Wednesday of the month at the Elbow Room beginning at 7p.m. Contact:
