Indianapolis City Market looks to be your evening destination

The new Twilight Market series will offer fun evening entertainment, food, and beer

The only things here are me, the bartender, and my beer. It's almost eerie how quiet the market is, only a few vendors are still open, maybe only one. Two or three people are downstairs wondering through the stalls, munching on some Three Carrots. It's nearly 6 p.m. and the Indianapolis City Market is a lonely place to be.

This is all about to change.

Starting June 9, and on each subsequent second Thursday through September, beginning at 5 p.m. the Indianapolis City Market will be holding their newest venture, the Twilight Market.

From 5 - 8 p.m. "the West Plaza of Indianapolis City Market will host farm stands, craft vendors, live music and entertainment – featuring local favorite, Chamber Music during its inaugural event – food tastings, and a beer garden hosted by Tomlinson Tap Room," says the press release from the market's Public Relations Director, Jorge Dorantes.

According to Stevi Stoesz, Executive Director of the Indianapolis City Market, “The Indianapolis City Market, with all its great daytime programming, has a real opportunity to capture a growing audience of market-goers who are staying downtown after the workday concludes by offering fun, lively events like the Twilight Market for families and guests of all ages. Patterned after various street fairs around the country, Twilight Market is designed to celebrate local merchants and vendors and enhance placemaking in the Market East District.”

This is a much needed change for the City Market to keep with the influx of people moving and living in the Downtown area. The West Plaza of the market is the perfect gathering place for Hoosiers looking for something different to spend their evenings doing, including  "ping pong, giant-sized games of checkers and chess, corn hole and a range of other designated placemaking activities." The addition of live music from the Indy Chamber Orchestra — with a new act scheduled each month — makes it just that much better.

This is a huge move for the City Market, a part of our city that we should treasure and that should be a part of each and every one of our weekly lives. Hopefully this event will bring about a new after work crowd to the market that has been missing for years.

The Twilight Market is open to the public, with street parking and bicycle racks available for convenience.
