Indy singers compete for local crown
Hundreds of American Idol fans packed Greenwood Park Mall last week to see five of the 2004-2005 finalists perform, and to cheer on friends and family as they competed in the "Indianapolis Idol" competition. In addition to singing and taking questions from the audience, the five Idols - Jon Peter "JPL" Lewis, Jasmine Trias, Nikko Smith, Jessica Sierra and Mikalah Gordon - turned the tables on Paula, Randy and Simon by acting as celebrity judges for the Indianapolis Idol show.
In the audience were, apparently, JPL's biggest fans.
The Indy Idol finalists all put on compelling performances, including Josh, whose superstar stage presence had even the Idol girls up and dancing for his rendition of "I Love Rock 'n' Roll," but the clear winner was 14-year-old Kristen Mikesell and her super-soulful performance of Aretha Franklin's "Respect"; even before she was announced as winner, the other finalists were already giving her the we're-not-worthy bow. This was the only Indianapolis appearance of the touring event, which visits 164 malls across America.
