No, Danke Schoen is not a tribute to Wayne Newton. It’s a one-man show by Kyle Ragsdale at Harrison Gallery opening Nov. 2 from 6-10 p.m. The exhibition launches the annual Spirit & Place Festival and is the culmination of Ragsdale’s Creative Renewal Fellowship, which enabled the painter to travel to Germany, where he spent time with Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra music director Mario Venzago. In addition to the gallery opening, and in keeping with Spirit & Place’s theme of “Living Generously,” there will be a dessert pitch-in in the Harrison’s gymnasium. Participants are invited to bring something that begins with the first letter of their name, so Bob, bring your brownies. German-inspired food, accordion music and polka dancing round out the evening. For more information, go to www.harrisoncenter.org or call 317-396-3886.
Galerie Penumbra’s last hurrah
For the past three years, Cheryl and David Mattingly’s Galerie Penumbra in the Murphy Arts Center in Fountain Square has been a consistently rewarding destination — a bright space in which to experience some of the city’s most interesting visual artists. But all good things come to an end, apparently, and Galerie Penumbra will close after presenting an exhibit of new paintings by Rocco Valadez. The show opens Nov. 2, 5-9 p.m. and runs through Nov. 24. Meanwhile, the Mattinglys say they’re opening a new space in the Murph, so stay tuned. Galerie Penumbra is located at 1043 Virginia Ave. For more information, go to www.galeriepenumbra.com or call 317-822-8331.
Art & horror films

The opening reception takes place Nov. 2, 7 p.m.-midnight. Find ALCHEMY in the Murphy Art Center, 1043 Virginia Ave. No. 3. Call 317-634-9700 for info or go to myspace.com/alchemygallery.
