'Hot Licks Cool Chicks,' take 2

Jazz Chuck Workman The Cool Chilies play the Jazz Kitchen Saturday, April 21 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The second edition of the successful “Hot Licks Cool Chicks” concert will take place Friday, April 21 at 7:30 p.m. in the Indiana History Center’s Basile Theater. The concert is part of the Sounds of Indiana Series and is produced by Mark Szobody, IHC director of special events. This year’s lineup of top-flight women performers will feature an instrumental section headed by jazz pianist/educator Monika Herzig and bassist Jennifer Kirk. The vocalists include Jennie DeVoe, Paula Owen, Shannon Forsell, Cynthia Layne and Janiece Jaffe in solo and ensemble performances. For the second year, I will have the honor of MCing this gathering of extraordinary women performers. Tickets for “Hot Licks Cool Chicks” are $17, $13.50 for IHC members and $10 for students. Jazz appreciation month (JAM) • Local jazz poet/visual artist Bam Miller will perform a free “Let’s Do Lunch” concert Wednesday, April 19 at the Artsgarden from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. honoring Jazz Appreciation Month. Miller, who has been a prolific chronicler of jazz performers with her sketchpad, will recite her jazz poems of “Jazz Blues and Other Hues” backed up by the Fantastic Quartet of David Young, Melvin Rhyne, Bill Meyer and Jack Gilfoy. • Other Artsgarden JAM performances: Friday, April 21, Mary Moss and Friends; Sunday, April 23, Monika Herzig Acoustic Project at 2 p.m.; Tuesday, April 25, Gregg Bacon & Company at 12:15 p.m. • The Scottish Rite Cathedral salutes JAM April 20-21 with the Butler Jazz Combo, the Jordan Jazz Vocal Group and Mark Buselli. Performances both nights start at 7 p.m. Call 317-239-1000 for ticket info. • The IUPUI Jazz Band performs a JAM concert honoring big band arrangers Thursday, April 20 in the auditorium of the IUPUI-IT Building at West and Michigan streets at 7:30 p.m. There is an admission fee. Jazz data • Award-winning pianist/ composer Becky Archibald will give a sneak preview of her upcoming performance at Carnegie Hall Friday, April 21 at 7 p.m. in the historic building housing the offices of Young & Laramore, 407 Fulton St. The performance is open to the public with a suggested $10 donation. • D’vine a Wine Bar offers jazz 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, April 21, with Tim Brickley.
