Herron School of Art and Design BFA Thesis Exhibition

Three stars

Indianapolis Artsgarden; April 2-12.

Compelling works by Phil O’Malley, Rachel Meyer Simon and Kathy Weliever did indeed catch the attention of passers-by, who stopped, studied the artwork, glanced at the artists’ statements and continued on their way to and from Circle Centre Mall. O’Malley’s oil and mixed media on canvas are floating colors as shape changers from different angles. Portraiture in parts of face and whole face, painted large, is Weliever’s oeuvre. Simon’s interpretations of “humanity’s anatomy” manifest themselves as bold shapes with elements of surprise. In oil on canvas, oil and pastel on wood panel and charcoal on pastel paper, together with the arresting “Holocaust Heart,” Simon’s are the most intellectually themed pieces, delivering much to think about.
