Norah Jones and the Handsome Band return to Indianapolis next Tuesday in support of her newest album, Not Too Late, on the Blue Note label.
This is the third release for Jones, who skyrocketed to fame with “Don’t Know Why” and a host of other singles off her 2002 Grammy Award-winning debut, Come Away With Me.
Despite the hype that surrounded her initial success, Jones has remained true to her roots as a club musician. From her early days in New York playing with artists such as Wax Poetic and the Peter Malick Group, to the Little Willies and her current Handsome Band, she has maintained a low-key and collaborative element to her work that keeps it grounded in a jazz authenticity.
Not Too Late is the first album on which Jones wrote or co-wrote all of the material, and her performance of this more personal material marks a maturity that continues to earn her comparisons with Billie Holiday and Nina Simone.
Jones may still be young, and her style may still be evolving, but her voice is flawless. Though she sounds great on CD, hearing her live is the way she is meant to be heard.
