Looking for Halloween activities? Here are just a few suggestions.

• The Annual Irvington Halloween Festival is Oct. 28. The festival begins at 9 a.m. on East Washington Street between Arlington and Ritter. There will be a host of children’s activities, including a stage of entertainment, such as the Blue Monkey Sideshow at 2 p.m. Contests on the library lawn include the Giant Pumpkin Roll, Pumpkin Seed Spitting Contest and the Pumpkin Carry. A costume contest at 3:30 p.m. will be held on Audubon Circle with a costume parade at 4 p.m. Over 75 vendors will provide food and craft items. Other Irvington Halloween events include the Ghosts and Infamous Places of Historic Irvington ghost tours Oct. 27-28 at 6:30 and 9:30 p.m. presented by Haunted/Historic Investigations and Tours. Tickets are $15 or both tours for $25. Tours begin at the Lazy Daze Coffee Shop. The play Revenge of the Baron’s Revenge will be performed at the Bona Thompson Center Oct. 27-28 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 29 at 2 p.m. (Call 634-9063 or 201-3436 for more information.) • The Studio School & Gallery presents the “Ghosts of New Orleans Masquerade & Benefit” Oct. 28 from 7-11 p.m. at the gallery, 5610 E. Washington St. The costume event will feature a Cajun buffet (7-8:30 p.m.) from Yats, desserts from the French Quarter and music (8:30-11 p.m.) from the Jeremy Vogt Band and others. A beer garden will be provided by The Legend featuring Abita Brewery and will offer a selection of fine wines and other import beers. Featured artists for this show are Teal Schlueter (photography), Karena Velikan (oils) and Kris Arnold (photography). Photography will depict the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in some of the hardest hit areas. Additionally, Kristin May, Kristin Hubick, Skoalar, William Mathews, Marti Icenogle, Mary Lessing, Susan Vogt and Jan Flexon will have work available. Day of the Dead
• A free Day of the Dead celebration will be held at the Indianapolis Art Center Oct. 28 from 3-8 p.m. El Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday that rejoices in the lives of those who have passed on, and lies in the belief that the celebration will bring their spirits back for the day. The event includes national and local entertainment, hands-on cultural activities for all ages, works for sale and an opportunity for you to add your own mementos to a community altar. A highlight of the day is Tarima Son, a group formed by graphic artists, dancers and musicians based in Chicago who follow the tradition of Mexican son jarocho, traditional music of the state of Veracruz. (Tarima Son will also host a free Day of the Dead workshop and performance Oct. 28 from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the Glendale Library Branch.) Also performing are Ensamble Folklórico Indianapolis and Mariachi Zelaya. Remembrance poems will be hosted and presented by writer and poet Ricardo Parra and Pam Valdez will tell stories. Other activities and traditional Mexican food will also be on offer. While there, guest can view the Altar Exhibition (through Nov. 26) and the Shrine Exhibition (through Nov. 5 in ARTSPARK). • Garfield Park Arts Center will be hosting several free arts activities in a week-long festival, which kicks off with a music- and art-filled procession from Garfield Park to Fountain Square Day of the Dead festivities Oct. 28. Once in Fountain Square, from 11 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the National City Bank parking lot (corner of Shelby and Prospect streets), guests can see numerous altars created by artists and local community members, and enjoy music, dance and traditional Mexican food.
