Four stars (PG)

Nikki Blonsky, John Travolta

Delightfully goofy, good-natured musical based on the Broadway hit based on the 1988 John Waters’ film, about short, stout Baltimore teen Tracy Turnblad (the effervescent Blonsky), who dreams of becoming a regular dancer on a local American Bandstand-style dance show. Hairspray is a treat; the spirit is buoyant, the songs are just fine and Travolta is charming as he reprises iconic drag queen Divine’s role as Tracy’s mother. 115 minutes.

DVD INFO: A special edition and two separately packaged regular edition DVDs are available. One of those preserves the film in the anamorphic widescreen format, while the other hacks off nearly a third of the feature for the fullscreen (aka pan & scan) version. Shop carefully. The two-disc Shake and Shimmy edition includes a feature length documentary, two commentary tracks, deleted or altered scenes, a sing-a-long feature, and a bunch of featurettes.
