Fundamentalism examined

ManKind Project, Indiana, in conjunction with St. Luke’s Men’s Spirituality Group, will present “Barbarians at the Gates: Fundamentalism and the Future of Western Civilization,” a lecture by Douglas Gillette, M.A., M-Div., a theologian specializing in the area of theoretical mysticism.

In his talk, Gillette will explore the implications of the significant resurgence of militant fundamentalism — Jewish, Christian, Muslim and even modern-scientific fundamentalism — for the future of modernity and pluralistic democracy. He will focus in particular on how mistaken fundamentalist understandings of various myths of the end of the world (the eschaton) serve as primary drivers for the “culture wars” within Western society as well as for international conflict.

The lecture is free and will be held Thursday, Sept. 23, 7:30 p.m. at St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, 100 W. 86th St. Doors open at 7 p.m. for coffee, light snacks and fellowship, and socializing will follow the presentation until the doors close at about 9:30 p.m. For more info visit:
