Fresh, healthy, tasty

Those words describe the kinds of food you’ll find at the 11th Annual Middle Eastern Festival, Sept. 22-24 at St. George Orthodox Christian Church, 4020 N. Sherman Dr. “We use lots of parsley, cumin, allspice and lost of garlic,” says Mina Khoury, who manages the festival’s food preparation. “Some dishes go back thousands of years.” With such authentic Middle Eastern dishes as gyros, lamb shanks, kibbee, falafel, kafta, shish tawook, grape leaves and a myriad of pastries and beverages on offer, there’s plenty to eat. But you can also listen to Middle Eastern music, watch or learn folk dances and shop for jewelry, groceries, icons, books, CDs, cookbooks and other gift items. Adult admission is $3 and children under 12 are free. The festival will be held Friday from 4-11 p.m., Saturday from noon to 11 p.m. and Sunday from noon until 5 p.m. For information, call (317) 547-9356, email or go to
