Flawless fun

Visual Art Review | What you missed

Visual Art Review | What you missed
Plenty of finger food and beverages, comfy shoes and a party-like atmosphere made last Friday’s Broad Ripple Gallery Tour a successful way to see the best of these neighborhood gift shop and art anchors, which all hosted the throngs beautifully.
Lydia V. Gerbig-Fast’s work is on view at Artifacts, one of the shops in the Broad Ripple Village Gallery Tour ’03
My evening began and ended at Happy Trails Studio, a little cottage on Cornell where artist Anne Bond creates and sells her unmatched modern, hand-painted canvas “Poor Man” rugs. The friendly atmosphere reflected the quality functional art for the home found here. Customers were sardines at Turandot (my favorite shop in BR), snapping up eclectic do-dads and jewelry from their uniquely fab collection. I couldn’t leave without the Humpy Puppy gum and am still daydreaming about the pink and gold ceramic lemonade urn. The enameled flower jewelry of Lydia V. Gerbig-Fast at Artifacts hands-down took the jewelry cake. Her superior craftsmanship and dainty designs are fantastic and should garner rock star clientele. Bronka Zabelin’s “Civilized Cat” sculptures were in good company with other high-quality ceramic pieces at Ruth D. Stoner’s gallery, specializing in custom tile and pottery. Haus’ seductive shabby chic makes worn-out stuff look like you need it. They’ve got the style to pull it off. Shabby is the key term, but I’m not one that buys into the descriptor, “vintage,” as meaning antique or quality. Their “vintage” chandeliers were remarkably similar to Menards Italian import version, stock number 3515806. The evening went by so fast that it was impossible to visit all 15 venues. The BRVG Tour brochure, designed by Wilco, with maps and brief gallery descriptions, was a perfect size to slip into your pocket as you trotted from place to place. Though I thought my purse was going to get snagged by the white kids dealing rock behind one merchant’s building, the evening was pretty much flawless fun. The fall Broad Ripple Gallery Tour will take place Sept. 12; call Artifacts at 255-1178 for more information.
