When Phil Campbell, the arts impresario behind the Murphy Art Center, closed his long-running Hot House Art Gallery, he said he imagined someday opening a space dedicated to erotic and fetish art — the first gallery of its kind in Indianapolis. That day has arrived.
Boxx is the gallery’s name; the main gallery space for this new venture is a floor-to-ceiling black satin box located in Suite 218 of the MAC at 1043 Virginia Ave. in Fountain Square. Boxx’s grand opening will present Creatures of Habit, new paintings by Jo Legner.
Of historical note: Around the turn of the last century, nuns from St. Patrick’s Church lived in this space for a period of six years. On April 13, 2004, the Indiana Ghost Trackers, along with Gary Spivey, a well-known medium from California, made contact with Sister Mary Margaret, the ghost of a nun who passed away there. She was apparently distraught because she had sex several times with a man and therefore remained earthbound for fear of being rejected in heaven. She has since passed into the light.
In honor of Sister Mary’s tainted stay and her acceptance despite her sexual exploits, the opening of Boxx will feature a series of figure paintings by Legner depicting “the punishment of solitude and the anguish of desires that must be filled alone.”
