Ed reviews Monsters vs. Aliens

Clever computer-animated action-comedy from Dreamworks. Susan's (voiced by Reese Witherspoon) wedding to Derek (Paul Rudd) is halted when a meteor crashes and causes Susan to rapidly grow to 49 feet tall, just 12 inches shy of the title character of The Attack of the 50-Foot Woman. The military (led by Kiefer Sutherland as Gen. W.R. Monger -- subtle, huh?) captures her and puts her in a top-secret prison with bug-headed genius (think The Fly) Dr. Cockroach (Hugh Laurie), the affable Blob-with-a-personality-and-the mind-of-a-stoner B.O.B. (Seth Rogen), the Creature from the Black Lagoon-ish Missing Link (Will Arnett) and a massive bug reminiscent of Japanese monster-movie icon Mothra. When an eight-eyed squid-like alien called Gallaxher (Rainn Wilson) invades Earth, the wimpy U.S. president (Stephen Colbert) orders the monsters to attack the alien threat in exchange for their freedom. Monsters vs. Aliens is zippy fun, but the 3-D feature lacks the depth of better computer-animated features. The screenplay is full of references and in-jokes for film buffs, but the writers forgot to flesh out their characters or explore the themes brought up by the story. 95 minutes.
