Echoes of Kinnison and Hicks

Steve Carr Carl LaBove, who performed alongside legendary comedians Sam Kinnison and Bill Hicks as the Texas Outlaw Comics, is one of the more animated, agitated comics currently cashing checks. More storyteller than jokester, LaBove is manic, over the top; his interpretations of ... stuff, defies explanation. Hell, it defies a lot more than that. It's equal parts performance art and comedy with enough improvisation that nobody knows what's coming next; not even LaBove. "I'm a scene-ist," he says. "I do comedy scene work. I bring up a subject and then I perform it. It's not jokes." LaBove's television and screen appearances include The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Roseanne, Seinfeld and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. If you like the show, stick around afterwards, LaBove has a reputation for approachability. LaBove is appearing at Crackers in Broad Ripple (6281 N. College Ave.) March 15-19 along with Monty Allen. The show is rated R. Tickets range from $8 to $16, except Wednesday when ladies (and other women) get in free and Thursday when college students slip in for $5. The 8 p.m. shows on Saturday and Sunday are non-smoking. For more information or reservations call 317-255-4211.
