Eats and treats at the Indy 500

Levy Restaurants goes big at the 500

In celebration of the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Levy Restaurants are stepping up their food game with seven new food dishes that can be found around the track on race day.

“The 100th running of the Indy 500 is a big event, and we want to celebrate it with big foods. You don’t need to eat outside the track, come to the track and eat,” said Chef Jonathan Williams.

To bring a local flavor to the track, Levy has partnered with Square Doughnuts and Clabber Girl baking powder, both of Terre Haute, Indiana.

We’ve seen the Krispy Kreme doughnut burgers at the state fair, now Levy is bringing the Square Donut Burger to the track for the 100th Indy 500. The Square Donut Burger is made with maple bacon and provolone cheese. This can be found in the main concessions outside the Pagoda Plaza, and in the Gate 1 area.

You can skip breakfast before going to the track because Levy is bringing us Clabber Girl Cheddar Biscuits and Gravy. It’s the Levy spin on the southern classic. Cheddar cheese mini biscuits made with Clabber Girl baking powder with steamy hot country sausage gravy.

Hoosiers love their tenderloin sandwiches, and Speedway is home to one of the best tenderloin sandwiches you can get in the state. Levy Restaurants has brought one of their own to the track this year with the pork tenderloin biscuit. It’s a jumbo pork tenderloin breaded and covered in a tangy jalapeño slaw. They put all of this on a Clabber Girl biscuit. I had the pleasure of sampling one of these on media day. This is one of the highlights of the new food items at the race this year.

Sriracha sauce has taken this country by storm over the past couple of years, and Levy created a burger made with Red Gold Sriracha Ketchup to celebrate. It’s a fresh grilled hamburger topped with a beer battered onion ring, shredded lettuce, and the Red Gold Sriracha Ketchup.

If you’re like me, then you’re a sucker for some good nachos. Levy has come up with an answer for our nacho craving at the track this year with their loaded nachos bowl. This bowl of awesomeness includes smoked BBQ pulled pork, pico de gallo, cilantro and a spicy sour cream. It has a little kick, but not over the top.

Levy has taken a classic American staple found at every sporting event and gave it a twist, literally. With the Twisted Hotdog in Biscuit, Levy takes an all-beef grilled hot dog, wrapped it in a clabber girl biscuit, and gave it some Red Gold Sriracha Ketchup for an added kick.

When you’re ready to wash it all down (and if you’re over 21), you really need to try the Victory Lane milkshake. These plastic bottles of greatness are an adult take of the classic cookies and cream milkshake. Levy makes a salted caramel milkshake spiked with Fuzzy’s Vodka (it is Indy in the month of May, after all), adds a Clabber Girl chocolate chip cookie to it. My personal favorite part of this is that they are served in plastic bottles commemorating the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500. We get an amazing milk shake and a souvenir.

All of this join your favorites in the main concession stand in Pagoda plaza and various areas around the track. Levy Restaurants are doing it big this year: they will bring in 20 chefs who plan to prepare 22,000 hamburgers, 32,000 hot dogs and 15,000 pork tenderloins.
