Summertime is a perfect season for dance music and Indy is no exception. Naptown DJs and producers are marking the times with new mixes for chilling on the beach, driving with your top down or, for the rest of us, getting your party on. Be sure to check out the online version of this column for download links!
Adam Jay: Live In Tokyo
First comes a live recording from one of Indy’s most internationally celebrated producers, Adam Jay. This 90-minute mix was recorded at his bi-monthly gig on May 23 at Studio Cube 326 in Tokyo. The shorter CD version includes a whopping 34 tracks. Adam’s style is full spectrum, driving and leaning on hard flavor of techno. You can check him out regularly at Therapy Nightclub or you could be adventurous and catch him somewhere else on this planet.
Tyler Stewart: Spring Fiend
A resident at Indy’s weekly deep house night, Keepin’ It Deep, Tyler Stewart (better known to many as Stewbot) put out this bouncy deep house mix on Indy’s famed dance music blog circlecitymixshow.com in early June. Anyone that knows Stew will tell you: He loves turtles and he loves to party.
DJ Action Jackson: Young, Gifted and Black
Jackson frequents the hipster dance party scene in Bloomington and Indy, with a weekly at Tip Top Tavern every Wednesday. I want to say his style is “mash-up,” which is probably the closest genre you could pin on it. But I should point out that it spans many decades from the Jackson Five all the way to currents like electro house and Hot Chip.
Ben Wu: Even Sicker
A Detroit native and original member of the Bang Tech 12, Ben Wu knows how to techno (which was invented there — go ahead, I know you want to wikipedia it). The third addition to his Sick series (following Sick and Sick 2) brings out more of the tech house style and even gets a little disco on us.
Taylor Norris: DEMF ’08 Promo
Taylor drops us down to 127 beats per minute in this minimal techno mix. He recorded this for distribution at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival in late May, when techno and minimal techno brought 80,000 people to the city of cars. Ben Wu and Taylor recently started up the Indianapolis branch of the Bang Tech 12, so keep your eyes open for their first event in August.
FortyFiveDegrees Promo: DJ Edi & Cool Hand Lex
If you frequent any of the local ultra lounges you’ve no doubt heard these two local jockeys. Their styles can best be described as pop mixed with house mixed with mash-up or just plain what makes people dance. This mix isn’t available for download, though — it was a gift to those that celebrated with the restaurant/club on their opening night last month.
