Davis and Devitt

Will Devitt and Sharlee Davis have played together since 1989 when they got their start in a country-dance band, the Neon Ramblers. The two recognized a mutual love of songwriting and began co-writing music together. “When we’re sitting in my living room working on a song and trying to figure out a great line or chord to go with it, that is the ultimate for me,” Davis says.

Music has run in their blood from early on. Davis’ grandfather was a piano player in Muncie, Ind. And she grew up listening to jazz; some of her favorite artists include Linda Ronstadt, Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Krall. Devitt fell in love with many of the great jazz guitarists through the years. This would lead him to join Davis and offer private guitar lessons of his own.

The duo mix together country, folk, acoustic pop and jazz to produce a distinct sound. “You have to write about what you know,” Davis says. The jazz element has become a staple for Davis and Devitt’s music in the last five years. They average 120 shows a year — all self-booked at various nightclubs, colleges, coffeehouses and private parties throughout the Midwest. They have shared the stage with such musical talents as the Cowboy Junkies and Carrie Newcomer. “We’re lucky that we can play regionally and make a living,” Devitt says.

The duo has a total of six albums out — most recently having released Body of Water in 2004. They are currently working on a new CD that will include jazz standards and original songs.

You don’t have to travel far to see Davis and Devitt perform, as they are Thursday regulars at BRiX, 65 S. First St. in Zionsville (www.brixzionsville.com).
