David Hochoy and Dance Kaleidoscope were chosen to be among the 2016 Governor’s Arts Award recipients.

The Indiana Arts Commission (IAC) announced the decision earlier today.

“The Governor’s Arts Awards recognize significant contributions to and achievement in the arts, but this year’s event will have the added notable significance of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Indiana Arts Commission and has been designated a legacy project of the Indiana Bicentennial,” said Governor Pence in a press release. “This year’s recipients have contributed greatly to the cultural heritage of our great state through their creative talents and dedication. The First Lady and I look forward to honoring their achievements.”

The are chosen by an independent panel from Indiana's arts, education, business, public and private sectors. They whittle down the competition after a public call for nominations creates the pool. According to the IAC website the panel reviews and scores nominations based on "the nominee's total body of work and the impact of the nominee's work on the cultural climate of the city, region, the state of Indiana, or on the national and international level." DK and Hochoy have raised that bar.

Hochoy joined DK in 1991, since then he has made it a household name in the Indy art world.

To put it in context there are just a few of the recipients of the award: Eli Lilly, Robert Indiana, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., Dr. Alice Nichols, Christel DeHaan, The Children's Museum of Indianapolis and Henry Leck and the Indianapolis Children's Choir.
