Cummins ahead in "green" rankings

In Newsweek's fourth annual ranking of the biggest companies with the greenest practices, Indiana-based Cummins, Inc. comes out at #52.

Each year, the Newsweek Green Rankings take the 500 largest publicly traded companies in the country and rank them according to environmental friendliness. To determine the eventual scores, Newsweek compares environmental footprints, management policies, and reporting practices.

To ensure the best and most comprehensive results, Newsweek joins forces with leading research organizations to rank the most "green" companies of the year.

"This recognition from Newsweek underscores the commitment of our Company and our employees to an important part of our corporate mission -- demanding that everything we do leads to a cleaner, healthier, safer environment," said Tom Linebarger, Cummins Chairman and CEO, in a press statement released earlier this month.

"We believe our focus on the environment allows us to deliver economic value to our stakeholders while making a positive impact on communities around the world," said Linebarger. "Providing efficient and clean power is a win for our Company, a win for our customers, and a win for the environment."

Cummins has been working toward this environmentally friendly reputation for decades. As the company deals with power sources and technology, it places special emphasis on meeting standards concerning air pollution and emissions.

In its most recently released plan to reduce its environmental footprint, Cummins examined its greenhouse gas emissions, waste and water footprints. From this examination the company was able to determine problem areas and set plans to remedy them.
