Culture Shock Festival

Xiu Xiu and others
DeVault Center Field, Indiana University - Bloomington
Saturday, April 14, noon, free, all-ages

Indiana University’s student-run radio station is putting on Indiana’s hippest festival of the year this Saturday — WIUX-LP 100.3 FM’s Culture Shock festival. An indie-rock all-star lineup is in store for those making a trip down to Bloomington.

The fest’s lineup draws heavily from the roster of Bloomington’s famed Secretly Canadian label for its talent. The label’s artists who will be appearing include T. Rex devotee David Vandervelde, sugary-sweet pop songwriter Richard Swift, Southern rock revivalists Catfish Haven and Bloomington’s own spazcore legends Racebannon.

The big acts on the schedule include lauded indie band Xiu Xiu, a powerful live duo whose sound is reminiscent of Morrissey singing over an ’80s new romantic noise band; Sunset Rubdown, the solo outfit for Wolf Parade and Swan Lake member Spencer Krug; and Make Believe, the new project for Joan of Arc frontman Tim Kinsella. Maps and Atlases, Nomo and Black Moth Super Rainbow will also make the trip to perform at Culture Shock.

WIUX will also present a slice of Hoosier-style indie rock by bringing in local bands the Coke Dares, the Delicious and Husband & Wife, as well as Indianapolis hip-hop group the Mudkids (who will also perform at an after-party that night at the Bluebird Nightclub) and Muncie’s twee pop favorites, Arrah and the Ferns.
