The year 2005 was rough, to say the least, for Jennifer Stephenson. Shortly after she was diagnosed with breast cancer, she lost her husband, Allen, and was left to live on Social Security disability alone. Her fight against cancer has included a full mastectomy, the removal of some lymph nodes, multiple surgeries and enduring chemotherapy and radiation. Too young to collect on her late husband’s entitlement and too sick to work, she has struggled to afford her medicine and pay her bills.
Now she’s running into a new hurdle: the possibility of losing her home.
That’s where Stephenson’s close friend, Doug Ullrich, stepped in by organizing a concert to benefit her fight. Cough It Up will feature several Indianapolis bands as well as other attractions. There will be raffles for gym memberships, restaurant gift certificates (to Yats, the 2007 NUVO Cultural Vision Award-winning restaurant) and even a free plane ride.
Performing bands include the Shirtless Biddles (a new folk band with members of Perfect Nothing), Mardelay (indie rock), Casket of the Blistered Social (alternative rock), a solo set by P.David (of Extra Blue Kind) and Hustler (local guitar rock heroes). The evening will be hosted by Indy’s caped wonder, Niswander, and the band will also perform.
To top it all off, the illustrious Naptown Roller Girls will make an appearance.
So, in review: see up-and-coming bands, the amusing and intriguing Niswander, the Naptown Roller Girls and experience lots of raffles, games and giveaways … all hosted at one of the best rock venues in Indianapolis.
The event will be a perfect way to spend a Sunday evening, and it’s all for a worthy cause.
