Children of Men

Four and a half stars (R)

Clive Owen, Julianne Moore, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Charlie Hunnam, Michael Caine

Powerhouse dystopian chase film/thriller/political statement from Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu mamá también, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban) set in 2027, 18 years after the last child on earth was born. Ex-activist Theo (Owen at his best) gets recruited by his ex-wife (Moore) to protect and transport a young woman (Ejiofor) who could be the last hope for humanity. The battle scenes are brilliantly staged and the quiet moments never hamper the film’s sense of edgy immediacy. Caine contributes a dandy cameo as well. 109 minutes. DVD INFO: Includes a commentary track, alternate and deleted scenes and several featurettes.
