Stephen Frears (The Queen, High Fidelity
) directs a tale set in Paris in the years before WWI, focusing on the peculiar romance between young Cheri (Rupert French the palest leading man I have ever seen) and sultry retired courtesan Lea (Michelle Pfeiffer). Both of them suffer from chronic too-cool-for-school-itis, refusing to acknowledge that what they have is more than a fling. Meanwhile, Cheri's mama, played by Kathy Bates, plasters a smile on her face while seething over the relationship. Consistently interesting and well-acted, but all the emotional repression gets enervating after a while. 92 minutes. DVD INFO: Includes deleted scenes and a featurette.
