Carrie Newcomer with Krista Detor

Four stars

Clarian Health Concerts on the Canal, Indiana History Center, Aug. 2

A dovetailing of extraordinary talents, each singing in her own voice, yet both delving into the particularity of ordinary events, places and especially the foibles of people. Both are verbal and musical painters, sculptors and mosaic artists. Their arrangements, seamlessly enjoined by performance partners, cover a range of styles. Neither gets stuck in a winning mode. They stretch and that’s the joy of listening to them in person and on their CDs. Up and coming Detor, with Dave Weber, opened for Newcomer, immediately engaging the audience with dusky vignettes of her experiences. Newcomer, with virtuoso keyboardist Gary Walters, brought her old favorites and topped those with new observations — the one about e-mail messages especially bringing on waves of applause. She can let loose and rip through a song, a surprise from her usual low-key, gentle style. On a steamy evening, it was an easy-listening treat. Signs on the green embankment on the other side of the canal reminded us that Gov. Daniels is promoting tearing up this gem of a park site for commercial use. Now that’s a horribly taxing issue.
