Carlos Alazraqui

Three and a half stars
Crackers Broad Ripple; Nov. 7

If you didn’t know that Carlos Alazraqui is a co-star of Reno 911 after seeing his stand-up, you suffered a mild heart attack and blacked out during the show. His comedy is strong enough on its own to anchor a following, yet he felt the need to mention his role in the Comedy Central mockumentary 932 times, and its novelty grew tiresome. At one juncture, he put on a fake mustache and aviators and took questions in-character as Garcia. The shtick lasted 36 seconds before a drunken meathead in the back called him “gay.” Instead of returning fire and owning a command of his captive and adoring audience, he embarrassedly dropped the character and continued forward, red-faced. Aside from his lack of improvisational prowess, his hour on stage was wholly excitable. He starts 100mph and does not slow down, with a broad and captivating vocal range, and a cache of quick and original humor that justifies his Hollywood success. If only he’d stop reminding us of it.
