Broadway Across America-Indianapolis; Clowes Memorial Hall; Feb. 20-25.

Michael York as the aged King Arthur perfunctorily plodded through this leaner, meaner, darker and, yes, sexier Lerner and Lowe version of T.H. White’s The Once and Future King. On the other hand, Rachel York as a many-gowned Guenevere buoyantly flitted toward doom in the towering shadow of James Barbour’s Lancelot. “When you shut out the world, you box yourself in,” proclaims the miracle worker turned seducer. Between his do-good-ing and Mordred’s sniveling, by a sinister, slimy Shannon Stoeke, one gets to savor the witty sarcasm and profound prescience penned by librettist and lyricist Lerner. Both Time Winters as Pellinore and Eric Anderson as Merlyn deliver the once-again timely profundity with grace. It’s definitely not a dancing musical, but it does have some fine tunes. Some who have witnessed earlier versions will have wondered what happened for the opening of Act 2. Yes indeed, this new touring version opened with frivolity in the garden and pushed “If Ever I Would Leave” toward the end of the action. The new orchestration fails to capture the nuances of Loewe’s music. It was mostly loud or louder. May 8-13 go experience Spamalot, Monty Python’s outrageous send-up on Camelot and the Holy Grail.
