Celebrate Anniversaries Statewide

The Granger-based Bare Hands Brewery 4th anniversary celebration on Dec. 23, 4-11 p.m., includes Rare Variations of MOB, Peanut Butter Imperial Stout and several Christmas Ales — some standard and some not so standard.

Daredevil Customer Appreciation Day on Dec. 12, 11 a.m.-10 p.m. at their new brewery and taproom in Speedway commemorates the week they brewed their first batch of Lift Off IPA three years ago at their original location in Shelby County and kicks off their month-long anniversary celebration with events through the end of January at locations across Indiana. Daredevil moved to Speedway in May 2015.

Evansville-based Tin Man marked their 3rd anniversary on Nov. 28.

Gary-based 18th Street Brewery 2nd anniversary party on Dec. 12 runs 12 noon-12 midnight with a roster of special events.

Public Greens at 900 E 64th St., on the Monon Trail at the corner of Cornell and 64th St., is celebrating their 1st anniversary Dec. 11-17 with Bier Brewery on draft.

St. Joseph brewmaster Alan Simon reports their 50th batch since their May opening will be brewed this week and Chilly Water founder Skip DuVall said to keep watch for the barrel-aging portion their 100th batch to roll out.
Follow up celebrating the 82nd anniversary of Prohibition Repeal by reading Bob Ostrander’s newly published sprightly book, Indiana Prohibition:The Story of Dry Indiana. Ostrander traces events, laws and personalities surrounding temperance and legislation and their effects on distilleries, wineries, breweries, taverns, saloons, shops, etc., from frontier days to the present. A special bonus is a purported “genuine recipe” for a pre-Prohibition beer. All together a fun read. Find the richly illustrated book at local bookstores and

National notice

Food&Wine Magazine named Planetary Brewing Company one of their 50 picks for best nano-breweries across the U.S. citing, …”this Greenwood nano brews up a diverse selection of beers on a two-barrel system. It has recently earned rave reviews for its rye IPA Hefeweizen…”

Sun King Along the Ohio River

Sun King is expanding distribution of 16-ounce cans and Fresh•Local•Beer on tap at more than 350 bars, restaurants and liquor stores throughout southwest Indiana in Clay, Crawford, Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Harrison, Knox, Martin, Orange, Owen, Parke, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Sullivan, Vanderburg, Vermillion, Vigo, Warrick and Washington counties, including the cities of Terre Haute, Evansville, Clarksville and New Albany.

Holiday Brews & News

Sun King is releasing Cowbell Porter, “a rich creamy Porter with hints of chocolate” in cans; Fistful of Hops Winter with a new hops combination in cans and draft; Malis Pi Belgian Wit made with apple cider, cinnamon and oats. Their draft only Bourbon-Barrel-Aged Timmie Imperial Stout delivers heady cocoa, dark chocolate, molasses flavors and smoky oat notes. Sun King says to bring them the aluminum tabs (beer, soda, energy drinks, canned water) you’ve been collecting to benefit the Ronald McDonald House by Jan. 9th for awards.

Thr3e Wise Men Mount Crumpet Christmas Ale is a “big rich malty wheat beer with lots of dark fruit and spicy character.” Their Challenge Question: “Do you know what famous villain lived on Mount Crumpet?”

Wicked Elf Strong Ale is Rock Bottom downtown brewmaster Jerry Sutherlin’s 10th holiday brew. During the tapping event, he talked about creating this Bier de Noel along with a handful of other brews as he closes out his 10th anniversary at RB. The sparkly amber hue matches a lovely flower garden aroma and a first sip of rich fruityness backed by Belgian dark cande sugar. The finish is crisp and clean. The Pumpkin Ale is chocolatey, spicy and chewy with traditional pumpkin pie spices. At the other spectrum is Hop Bomb IPA has a ruby grapefruit aroma and flavor followed by a grassy bitterness expected from an American IPA.

How the Gruit Stole Christmas is introducing BRBP patrons to a very different holiday profile, with a subtleness that invites conversation with each sip. It’s a good match with the special holiday food menu that equally features locally sourced ingredients.

Indiana City’s Cratchit is a warming beer brewed with English Marris Otter along with rich specialty malts to add sweet complexity and molasses aroma. The finished beer is then spiced with freshly cracked allspice and whole cinnamon sticks. In 22 oz. Bombers and draft.

Every First Friday at noon Indiana City hides an Indiana City gift card at one arts centric place in Indy. “Look for the clue on Instagram or Twitter. Decode the clue, find it and it’s yours,” according to the news release. Show and they’ll throw in an Indiana City trucker cap on your next visit to the brewery.

Bier on tap now: PDG Pale, Chinookalicious, and a brand new Sabbath Ale.

Half Moon brings back their holiday Honey-Rye. A soft honey aroma opens to a light sweet taste and velvety smooth creamy texture toward a slightly spicy and dry finish.

Mad Anthony’s 2015 OktoBEERfest Mad Brewers Challenge Winning Beer Hopocalypse Double IPA, created by homebrewers Dan Voors and Sam Snyder, was brewed at Mad Anthony with Brewmaster Jeremy Zuber. Coming in at 8.6% ABV and 76 IBU, Hopocalypse gains its special feature from 72 pounds of honey from Rekeweg Honey Company in Decatur. OktoBEERfest 2016 will take place Sept. 10, 2016 at Headwaters Park West in Fort Wayne. Details to enter at

Deviate brewed Oatmeal Stout on Dec. 1 to be ready as their holiday special.

Bloomington Brewing Company’s Krampus Dark Strong Ale imparts a dark, roasty malt aroma with a piney, resiny hop scent. Dry hopping with six citrus, spicy and earthy hops varietals results in intense, danky hoppiness up front, and the combination of the four leads to a smooth finish.

Flat 12’s 12 Beers of Christmas daily releases continue Dec. 9-12 with Fireside Irish Red with cinnamon, chipotle and barrel aged maple syrup,

Juniper Spruce IPA, Grandpa's Glazed Ham Porter. The 12 p.m. tapping on 12/12 of the 2015 edition of The Twelfth, an annual high-gravity specialty series from Flat12, “is a Black Barleywine packed full of robust malt character provided by chocolate malt, roasted barley, and a cold steep of roasted wheat malt in addition to a grist full of Munich and Pale Ale malts,” according to the news release.

Flat 12 reminds us, “12/12 is also 12 Chefs at City Market.”

A new hire

Erin Stevens recently joined Indiana City Brewing as their Marketing and Events Coordinator.

“Upon moving to Indianapolis, I began searching for a place to combine my love of craft beer and my PR and Marketing background. I sat down for a drink at Indiana City, fell in love with the beer and the people, submitted my résumé—I was welcomed to the family shortly after,” is Stevens’ nutshell entry into Indianapolis’ brewery scene.
Stevens says that after graduating from Ball State with a BS in Public Relations, she worked for a short time in Muncie at the Academy of Model Aeronautics and “before finding Indiana City,” she was a freelance designer and writer “searching for a small business with big goals. All of my previous event and marketing roles have prepared me for this professional path I've begun traveling.”

Wearing her ICB spokesperson hat, Stevens enthuses, “Everyone at Indiana City possesses a creative spirit and we love to see other creatives passionately practice their craft. In addition to providing our community with our craft (beer), we aim to create a place where art in all forms is embraced and supported through our efforts.”
