Beer buzz for the week of Feb. 3, 2016

Sun King’s brewmaster Dave Colt has become a master as well for crafting the essence of collaborations with Broadway Across Indianapolis.

Once the Musical is paired with pours of “ONCE: Guy Meets Girl” during the show’s run at Clowes Memorial Hall at Butler, Feb. 9-14.

From film to stage musical to beer, Colt’s transformation in a pint glass showcases an original brewing love story-triangle between “an Export Irish Stout with the hop profile of a Czech Pilsener, brought together by a distinctly American yeast strain. The result is a beer that is both rich in flavor and character, but also bittersweet,” explains Colt.
At ABV: 5.6% IBU: 39, “Guy Meets Girl” “plays its own music” in keeping with the Dublin-based slice of life musical set at a bar. If you’ve seen the 2007 movie you know the story, but be prepared for a few surprises when you experience the event live.

Japanese malt liquor — in Indiana

Tow Yard Brewer Tony Flemming shares “some fun news about a collaboration beer we just brewed with The Tap Brewing Company out of Bloomington (and now Mass Ave. as well).

“Beatbox Samurai is in a style we kind of just made up. It is a black, Japanese malt liquor. So think a malt liquor with a twist. We used over 300 pounds of rice in various forms (flaked rice, black rice, and brown rice syrup) to give it the Japanese part of the style. The rice will make the beer nice and dry and crisp, like you would find in a classic Japanese rice lager such as Asahi,” offers Flemming.

“We then made the beer black by adding a couple different debittered roasted malts. So the end product will be black in color, but won't have a lot of the expected roasty characteristic to go along with the color. It is a malt liquor because it is a higher gravity lager. We are expecting the ABV to be around 7%.

“It will be a month and maybe up to two months before the release. We are hoping to package a small amount into clear, 40 oz. bottles and the rest will be on draft. We are working on label art.”

The Beer will be available at the Tow Yard Taproom and both locations of The Tap (Bloomington and Mass Ave.).

Hoosier beer history repeats

The KOELSCHIP, newly opened Taproom for Central State Brewing at 2505 N. Delaware, is at the cradle of Indianapolis’ origin stories at Fall Creek and beyond. When you visit, take time to wander the neighborhood, chat with ‘old timers’ and then order up the Brett IPA, looking southward towards The Monument as you sip. Cast No Shadow on Liberty is local lore in a tulip glass. You won’t find the story on the menu — you have to ask — or go to the Nov. 30, 2015 CSB blog entry at to find the 1905 City ordinances prohibiting any downtown building obscuring Miss Liberty’s clear view as she perpetually looks southward, protecting us from stealthy invasions.

Hamilton County Bicentennial Brew Tours every Sunday from now through May is a seriously “back story" series. Check out The BrewsLine at or call 317-661-1334 for general public events and customized packages on a cozy white bus that takes you to breweries in Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville and the far reaches of Indianapolisto meet the brewers, sample beer and get a whiff of what lurks behind the visible. We won’t spoil the spin BrewsLine owner Darryl Sopoci metes out in tidbits but be prepared for some hauntings and [ahem] unsavory gossip. David Heighway, Hamilton County historian, traces a distillery at Strawtown (the area around Strawtown Koteewi Park, north of Noblesville), as early as the 1820s and the first known brewery to around 1865.

Winterfest 2016 wrap-up – at the top of Indiana’s Bicentennial

First stop for me was the New Boswell table to celebrate two “firsts”—first Indiana brewery baby of 2016 was born January 29th –her parents are New Boswell founders Kiera and Rodrick Landes—AND before Indiana Statehood became official in Dec. 1816, England immigrant Ezra Boswell built a brewery on Ft. Wayne Ave. [Richmond’s Municipal Building is now on the original brewery site] and operated it until he died in 1831. Brewing tradition continued through about 1915 with immigrants from Germany. Richmond Bottlers’ tradition continues. Ask Rodrick Landes about family connections.

New Boswell opened St. Patrick’s Day 2010 as the first modern-era brewery in Wayne County. Visit the Brewery & Tap Room at 410 N. 10th St., for a lineup of brews that includes tastes of history. Rose City Red Ale’s subtle enticements starts with a rosy sparkle layering into deep red tones, light floral aroma, light caramel sweetness and a crisp close. Richmond, at Indiana’s eastern start of The National Road, is known as “Rose City,” the "cradle of recorded jazz" and a string of other firsts. Find more at and here.

After New Boswell’s stop it was a whirl of catching up with brewers and staff from all corners, particularly the almost two-dozen newest making their first visit to Winterfest. Most amazing? Bare Hands with 40 small batch brews. Most fun? Watching the brewers visiting with each other, reaching out and welcoming the newest, all having as much fun as the patrons who started lining up before noon for early entry at 2 p.m.. Most special? Saying hello to Indiana State Fair retiree Pat Berger, who stood amazed as he witnessed the growth from the first Winterfest eight years ago, when he was still on staff as one of the Festival originators “and had keys to get in without having to stand in line.”


New brews and other news

Upland’s Campside Session IPA is back in 6-packs, 4-pack cans and on draught. “Late additions of hops allow the distinct fragrance of grapefruit, apricot and pine to be preserved as much as possible in the finished beer.
