Beer buzz

Liz Laughlin's Happy Pils at Rock Bottom North would make the kings of Wenceslas proud with her new Czech-inspired brew Pilsner beer. At the Aug. 6 tapping, it was described by a bar-mate as "perfect clear yellow, bitter as the standard-setting Urquell but here Sterling hops offers a pleasing finish." Jerry Sutherlin at RB downtown brewed his version, which we'll report on next week. Created in 1842, Pilsener comes from a blend of Bohemian and Bavarian brewing skills and ended preconceived notions that pale is meek.

View Indiana's long history of pilsners on, including 19th Century Norton's Pilsener brewed in Anderson and turn-of-20th century Champagne Velvet Pilsner brewed in Terre Haute. That reminded me of Micah Weichert's GABF 2006 bronze medal-winning Papa's Pils. Weichert recently returned to 75th Street Brewery in Kansas City, Mo., following his tenure with Vigo Brewing in Terre Haute.
