Beer Buzz: Upland's new look

Upland unveiled its "new look" at all locations April 9, including, of course, two Indianapolis spots: the Broad Ripple Tasting Room (4842 N. College Ave.) and Carmel Tap House (820 E. 116th St.). Why a "new look" for an iconic Indiana brewery? "The key for us is to have artwork on the bottles and tap handles that represent Upland's values and artisanship," explains owner Doug Dayhoff. "Over 15 years we did it without much of a system. We were all over the board, and it was time to clean it up and give it a more consistent look."

Upland's newly-released Haystack Lightning American Wheat, the second beer in the brewers' choice Side Trail Series, is draft-only. Head brewer Caleb Staten says,"Though inspired by Upland Wheat Ale, Haystack Lightning forges its own identity with American yeast and citrusy hops that set it apart from its cloudy, spiced muse."

April is Earth, Poetry, Alcohol Awareness and Grilled Cheese Month. Broad Ripple Brewpub is layering cheeses with veggies on swirled rye, perfect with their new, refreshing citrusy Middle Child American Wheat, full-flavored at only 4.5% ABV and nine bittering units. Union Jack Pub in Broad Ripple, under new management by Jay and Chelsey Wetzel, is making transit to and from Indy Eleven home matches easy, not to mention offering Butler ArtsWeek attendees free queso and chips with an entrée. And if you're game to try 80 different craft brews from Indiana, the Midwest, USA and worldwide over a year's time, the rewards are tempting, as is the menu featuring a lovely Chicken Velvet Soup and Tuscan Chicken Salad. Tomlinson Tap Room now has Quaff On! Bourbon Busted Knuckle on tap. It's a burly brew with layers of flavors to enhance hearty, full-flavored dishes such as their crockpot Shepherd Pie. Quaff On! is extending from its Nashville base to Bloomington with a Tap Room in the former Cafe Django space at 116 N. Grant St. They're joining Function Brewing's newly opened brewpub at 108 E. Sixth St.

Oaken Barrell's seasonal Bavarian Hefeweizen King Rudi with hints of clove, banana and vanilla is now on tap.

Bloomington Brewing Company, Quaff On Brewing, Upland Brewing Company and Function Brewing, gathering together for a first all-Bloomington collaboration, crafted up a Black American Wheat beer to share at the festival, which will also offer 150 other brews from across Indiana and the Midwest.

April 14-20

April 15
Thr3e Wise Men head brewer Keely Thomlinson will walk attendees through making Green Tea Kolsch, 6:30-9 p.m. This Girls Pint Out event is open to all. NUVO stopped in for a pre-taste of this sunny hued, earthy aroma, refreshing citrusy brew teasing us into wanting to work in the garden.

April 15
Ruth's Chris Indianapolis celebrates its 20th Anniversary with a special limited edition of Bock of Elijah Bourbon Barrel beer at 96th and Keystone Ave. and 45 S. Illinois St. (Circle Centre) locations. The superbly balanced Dopple Bock, created in partnership with Thr3e Wise Men Brewing Co., imparts layers of fruityness mildly embraced by the feel of aging for six months in a Ruth's Chris exclusive 20-year anniversary Elijah Craig Bourbon Barrel.
