Beer Buzz 12-24

Past Events
The concept of Living Green fueled changes in brewing posts. Southside resident John Treeter returns to Oaken Barrel as brewery manager/head brewer after his stint at BRBP, and SOBRO dweller Jonathon Mullens leaves Flat 12 to be BRBP’s solo Brewmaster. Treeter’s OB team includes Sara Turner, lead brewer; Alejandra Cuenca, brewery assistant; Ryan Meyers, cellerman.

Treeter says he’s continuing the BRBP/OB friendship with his move, and Mullens, who credits Flat 12 with a rich experience, comments, “I am not looking to reinvent the wheel but invigorating what is already here and playing all the rich history that has been a part of Broad Ripple since anyone can remember. I look forward to working with the existing community as much as I can to help promote the BRBP.

Alan Simon, who left Thr3e Wise Men to be head brewer at Oaken Barrel triggered this new change. Simon, who lives downtown Indy, is part of a new brewpub at College Ave. just south of Mass Ave. Opening news is forthcoming from the folks at Chatham Tap.
Living and brewing in the same neighborhood takes us back to how it originally was.

New Brews & News

A tour of Broad Ripple craft spots provided holiday taste treats: BRBP’s annual Wee Alec Heavy delivers rich carmelized flavors and Jonathon Mullens premieres with Dark Hero, a perfectly balanced oatmeal milk stout with rich smoothness of hot chocolate growing from beans specially roasted by Joan and Dill at Strange Brew coffee shop in Greenwood. At Brugge, Ted Miller’s Hibernal Black Belgian Imperial Ale sparks the chocolate side of dark malts. And a taste of Outliers Barbegazi brandy-barrel-aged dark winter ale gifted gingerbread flavors heightened by cranberries. Outliers Hopes & Dreams starts uniqueness with rice wine yeast and continues with layers of botanicals. Thr3e Wise Men’s Mount Crumpet Christmas Ale combines wheat malt with spices growing into tastes of dark fruits. Savor it now; Brewster Keely Thomlinson says there’s a holiday change coming in 2015. Triton Tap BR is pouring Brewer Jon Lang’s strong yet sweet Barrel-Aged 500 Monks Belgian Ale and two versions of locally roasted coffee—B-Java’s espresso beans for I-65 Baltic Porter and Bee Roasters for B Java Brown. Experience the differences between a hearty Porter and a milder Brown.

Sun King designated their 1776th batch in honor of “our freedom.” Batch 1776: Red, White & Woo is on at SK’s newly refurbished taproom offering food and pints. Brewmaster Dave Colt says it’s a “Red Porter with cracked white grains and blue corn, packed with a patriotic punch of roasted malt flavor.”

Upland’s 15th anniversary beer, the German inspired lager Champagne Velvet is now in cans. CV originated as the flagship beer of the Terre Haute Brewing Company in 1901. Its motto “The Beer with the Million Dollar Flavor” was underscored by the medals it won.

Crown Brewing’s 4-Pack Bomber Special packs Java, Brown, Special Special Forces and Porter. Also out are bottles of Sour Pumpkin and Winter Warlock

Oaken Barrel’s American Stout and Epiphany Belgian Tripel seasonals are back.
