Theater roundup 3
A strange combination of theater is opening this weekend. In addition to the Christmas offerings, we have Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Quills, the story of the Marquis de Sade.
Disney's Beauty and the Beast will be staged by Indianapolis Civic Theatre Dec. 9-Jan. 8. It is the stage adaptation of the animated film. Though not as over-the-top in production values (Beef & Boards recently performed the scaled-down version) as the Broadway and touring shows, it's a darling little musical with some sparkle. Kids will love it. Performances are Wednesdays-Fridays at 7 p.m.; Saturdays at 2 and 7 p.m.; and Sundays at 2 p.m. (no shows Dec. 24-25). Tickets are $28. Civic is located at 3200 Cold Spring Road on the campus of Marian College. Call 317-923-4597, www.civictheatre.org for reservations.
On the exact opposite of the spectrum, only those 18 and over will be allowed to see the Alley Theatre's in-house production of Quills Dec. 9-23. You may remember the 2000 movie of the same name, but the play about the S&M master Sade received the 1995 Kesselring Prize for Best New American Play from the National Arts Club and a 1995 Village Voice Obie Award for Outstanding Achievement in Playwriting. VV said, "... gorgeously written, with every phrase turned to a high, gleaming polish, Quills is a superb piece of writing." Quills details the last days and writings of the Marquis de Sade, the most notorious inmate at Charenton Asylum. Shows are Fridays-Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. plus Dec. 22 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15; $10 ages 24 and under and seniors. The Alley Theatre is located at 1716 N. Illinois St. next to the CVS. Call 317-926-8888 for reservations.
And if you just haven't gotten enough of holiday-themed theater, there are still more opening this weekend. Try Miracle on 34th Street presented by the Scottish Rite Cathedral Dec. 8-23, 650 N. Meridian St., 317-262-3100.
