Audio anarchy

DJs Paul F. P. Pogue Elizabeth and Cassie — no last names, like Cher and Madonna — run a tag-team grindcore/punk set during Open Turntable Night at the Melody Inn. RPM Open Turntable Night at the Melody Inn, hosted every Monday since January by scene staple Mike Shimmercore, is the sort of night when you never quite know what’s going to come next, from one DJ to another, sometimes from one record to the next within the same set. Audio anarchy. “I thought, let’s just open the floodgates and let everybody bring their records,” Shimmercore said. “I figured it would be a way for people to get their vinyl out of the closets and show it off on a good stage, a good local show, where they can be the DJ, the star for a half hour or so.” It has the advantage of being one-of-a-kind; Shimmercore said he’s not aware of this being a common event even on the coasts. The show generally runs through eight half-hour slots, featuring DJs on their first time out as well as local veterans looking for a change. The names on a typical evening’s list are both familiar and new: Shadow, Cat Scratch Fever, Outcast X, T-Garrett, the duo of Cassie and Elizabeth. “It’s a good forum for even the experienced DJs to come and play stuff they can’t play at their normal night,” Shimmercore said. “We’ve got people bringing in children’s records, other people with avant-garde records. We’ve got stuff that you won’t hear at a DJ night anywhere. Stuff that would literally clear the floor, but it’s welcome here. You’d be surprised what’s out there. Every week it’s something new.” There’s only one rule: It’s all strictly old-school. “No CDs, no iPods, none of that shit, it’s all vinyl.” Shimmercore said that he can teach anyone the basics of running the turntables in two minutes; at a night like this, it’s about expression, not technicalities. “Play those personal records that you play alone to yourself, but play it on the Melody Inn stage,” Shimmercore said. “Show that part of yourself.”
