By Ronald Tierney
Severn House Mystery; $27.95
Someone is trying to kill Indianapolis’ crusty private eye, Deets Shanahan, while Deets’ occasional partner, Howie Cross, comes home to find a 5-year-old girl on his doorstep. These unrelated factors are almost fatal for both. How they survive while overcoming and solving their predicaments makes for another page-turner in the popular series.
Tierney, a former NUVO staffer, once again takes on “the establishment” and chews on social/cultural issues peculiar to Indianapolis yet endemic of the rest of the world. As always, the characters are rounded personalities, the dialogue is spirited and the plot is as clouded as unfiltered beer. And what’s this, Deets favors a Guinness over his usual U.S. mega-brand?
