Ask Renee: Upcycling your umbrella?

What to do with those spiky metal parts of your ruined umbrella?

Dear Renee,

In the intense rain last night, a wind gust turned my golf umbrella inside out.
I was able to turn it right side out again, but I am afraid it's beyond repair with bent spindles.

Do you have any thoughts of recycling or upcyling broken umbrellas?

Thank you,
Lisa a.k.a WindyRocksIndy

Dear Windy,

My best umbrella repurposing ideas are in the garden. You could use it next Spring as a cover for plants to protect against frost. Or maybe use the ribs and shaft to stake plants. Or even use the skeleton of the umbrella as a trellis.

I’m not even going to try to take credit for these (see 35 Ways To Reuse and Recycle Umbrellas) but you wouldn’t rain on my parade if you wanted to make me an upcycled rainbow umbrella skirt.

If these repair and upcycle ideas seem shady, you can always simply disassemble and recycle the metal parts of your umbrella.

Piece out,
