This preview showcased artists involved in the Art for Beds event held annually to benefit Gennesaret Free Clinics. While this one night event featured lithographs and screen-prints from a number of 20th century art icons, locally-based artists were also involved in the Feb. 26th preview and they donated their original work to this worthy cause. It was a pleasure to see the likes of Phil O'Malley and Walter Knabe sharing wall space with the heavyweights of a previous generation - Jasper Johns, Willem de Kooning, and Andy Warhol, among others. O'Malley's large abstract painting "Reconnoitering Between the Qs and the As" seemed to flow seamlessly into the Willem de Kooning lithograph "Untitled from Quatre Lithographies" while Walter Knabe's "Deity" - a hand screen print that portrays a Buddha statue with a raised right hand - hung next to Russell Young's screen print "Steve McQueen Mug Shot." The smiling actor is portrayed here raising a peace sign with his right hand for the police photographer. The Arts for Beds silent and live auctions take place on April 25 at the City Market.
